International Women’s Day & Gloria Steinem

Friday, March 10th, 2006

This past Wed was International Women’s Day, did you know?  I didn’t until I had the great fortune of attending Gloria Steinem’s talk presented by the University of Washington at Town Hall.  As Gloria said “well, at least we get one day.”

I cannot describe adequately what an inspiration it was to experience Gloria Steinem’s talk in person.  I consider myself a non-academic feminist: I’ve not taken women’s studies coursework nor read much feminist lit, but I believe in equality of the sexes and that women have been systematically denied autonomy and opportunity.  But even so, I was well aware of Gloria Steinem’s work and the impact she’s made on the women’s movement.

Without going on for pages, I want to report back that I am hopeful.  Despite our current presidential administration, despite the arcane anti-abortion law in South Dakota, despite the repressive abstinance-only educational policies that deny accurate sex education in our schools, I’m not discouraged.  A former church packed with like-minded individuals shared Ms. Steinem’s call to vote, call to activism and call to change.  There are more of us then them - they just happen to be in power and dominate the media.  Let’s change that this November.

Strappin’ it on L Word style

Friday, March 10th, 2006

For my first blog entry, do I tackle the disgrace surrounding South Dakota’s new anti-abortion legislation?  Discuss the inspiration I found at Gloria Steinem’s talk Wed night?  Wax poetic about International Women’s Day this past week?

Nah, I write about a TV show.  They say write what you know….

So how about all the strap-on sex this season in the L Word, Showtime’s lesbian drama?

We’ve seen Jenny handing Moira - ehr, Max - a harness & dil with the instruction “I want you to get dressed.” (Side note: I truly enjoyed the comment by an SE in NY regarding “Who is Jenny to tell anyone about cross-gender dressing?  Didn’t she just come out, like yesterday?!?)

We cheered when Shane’s harness (finally, finally) could be seen peeking above those tight leather pants for some poolside infidelity.  (I especially loved Shane’s quick manual adjustment before Shari started with the “fuck me Shane, fuck me.”)

I was more impressed when Max had anal sex with Billie at the Planet.  Gay transgender strap-on anal sex on prime time cable!

But I have more selfish reasons for loving all the use of dildos & harnesses on the L Word.  Babeland provided some of those sex toys!  We connected the L Word production with one of our favorite vendors, Outlaw Leather, and I really hope those fine harnesses are being put to good use.  Check out their Annie-O harness.

I’ve yet to see a Babeland logo get any screen-time, but a girl can dream….
