Phooey Louie

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

HBO launched a new sitcom called Lucky Louie, which airs after the extremely popular and lovable show Entourage. It’s being billed as a modern Honeymooners, (working class Joe trying to get by) which seems to mean they say “fuck” a lot and deal openly with sex.

I wish I could say that the dialogue picked up where Sex and the City left off, with sexually savvy women exploring fantasies and getting off. But the episode I saw might as well have been filmed in the Fifties for how retro the whole treatment of female sexuality came off.

The main character’s wife has an orgasm while fucking her husband for the first time in 12 years. She’s ecstatic and a little remorseful that it’s taken her so long to feel this much pleasure. Ok, so far I buy that. But then the rest of the show depicts her on this quest to get off again in the same way (picture lots of huffing and puffing). When she can’t, they’re both frustrated and perplexed, and she gives up saying she’ll just go back to the way it was before.

So what’s wrong with this picture? The writers had every opportunity to turn her on, and they left her hanging just to play it for laughs. My beefs:

  • She’s a nurse, wouldn’t she have known about her clitoris and its potential for pleasure?
  • The husband talks to his male coworker about the problem, but his wife doesn’t talk to her horny best pal about why she can’t come. Come on, girls love swapping sex talk.
  • tv vibratorThe neighbor across the hall is amusing everyone with her orgasmic moans while she gets off with her vibrator, which the neighbor’s husband tells Louie about, but Louie fails to make the connection that a vibrator might produce similar results with his own wife.
  • The neighbor and his wife have a chance to talk about her vibrator (like the one in the picture, which they do show proudly), but they don’t and he just winds up feeling inadequate, which is so stereotypical.

Anyway, I won’t be tuning in again because that kind of sexual idiocy isn’t funny, it’s just irritating. And women deserve so much more. We’ve come along way since the Honeymooners!

Babeland the Movie Star

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

directorThat’s right, we’ve made our film debut. One of our New York stores was recently in a film called His Name is Cosmo that just played at Newfest, the Gay and Lesbian film festival. It’s a great way to see new films made by all sorts of wonderful queer people. If you missed it this year, you’ll have to check it out next year.

In our debut, Tristan Taormino (a former employee) has a cameo as one of our fantastic Sex Educators helping a couple pick out a toy. They take it home and love it (of course) and in fact, the plot revolves around the fact that maybe they like it a little too much. Is that possible? I don’t think so…

Looking for other gay and lesbian film festivals? Check them out during the month of June in a town near you. You might just be able to catch us before the month is up.

Babeland Pride!

Monday, June 19th, 2006

pride2005It’s that time of the year. Pride month – when we celebrate all things gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer. From rainbow flags to parades, Babeland always makes sure that we’re in on the action. In fact, the day of the Pride parade is counted as an official company holiday. How great it that!

This year, as always, Babeland will be at various Pride events, handing out free stuff and supporting our fellow lgbtq’ers. We’re even hosting an event of our own… read on to find out:

New York

Babeland has decided to skip the madness that is the main Pride parade and focus our attentions on the smaller events that happen all over the city.

Friday, June 23rd: Trans Day of Action. We’ll be there supporting our trans community and speaking out.

Saturday June 24th: Mermaid Parade. If you’ve never been to this classic New York event at Coney Island, you have to go. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen and we’ll be right there with them.

Dyke March: This is a march, not a parade and it feels really powerful to take to the streets. Even if you’re not a queer woman, come out and watch and support those who are. This event is right after the Mermaid Parade so you can do a double header and go to both!

Sunday, June 25th: Haven’t had enough? Ready for a party? Hit up the Pride Parade and the come down to our Soho Location for a Singles Bash. Instead of all the old, tired parties that everyone goes to after Pride, check out this new one. What could be better than finishing up your Pride weekend surrounded by dildos? Plus, the first 50 people to arrive get a free vibrator. That’s the best way to celebrate Pride.

Seattle:

On Sunday June 25th, look for our Seattle Babeland crew in the Pride Parade! They’ll be swashbuckling their way through the parade as the Pirates that have the booty you need. I’m so jealous that I can’t be there with them with my eye patch on.

Later that night, the place to be is the Queers on Steers Gay Pride Party at Cowgirls Inc. Babeland is co-sponsoring and it promises to be night of roping and riding. Plus, since we love to give things away for free, the first 100 people to arrive receive a free Babeland Silver Bullet. That could be useful when you’re trying to get the filly of your choice to come home with you.

San Francisco

Sunday, June 25th: If you’ve ever wanted to see what all those hard-working people at this very website look like, then the place to be is San Francisco pride! Our Babeland crew will be there as the Mod squad you won’t believe. If you want to find them, look out for the giant sized Orchid Gs, Babelights and Butt Beads they’ll be carrying.

Phew! Babeland sure knows how to celebrate. Check us out at Pride and check back for pictures of how awesome we looked!
