Sunday School Teacher Fired for Being a Woman

cnnWhat’s that you say? It’s true. In Watertown New York (where??) a woman (pictured) named Mary Lambert who had been teaching sunday school for 54 years was fired. Why? Because a Bible verse in Timothy says that women shall not have authority over or teach men. The reverend who fired her also serves on the city council but he has said that this rule apparently only applies within the church. Outside of the church he’ll just discrimnate based on the usual reasons (not what he actually said).

Ugh. What year is this? I know the literal vs non literal Bible interpretation has been going on for quite awhile now, but in this case I find this reverend’s decision to be stupid and gutless. Stupid because he fails to realize that religion must adapt in order to thrive. And gutless because if he really believed this, he would practice it fully in all areas of his life. He doesn’t because he knows that society will condemn him. His wife probably will too.

I have trouble with the term “Cristian courtesy” being used in the service of innuendo. If this pastor really wanted to use Christian Courtesy, this woman would not have been fired using Scripture as a false pretense. The woman was over 80! They could have thrown a Golden Jubilee in honor of her over 50 years of service and retired her.

But no, this “Man of God” chose to use a Bible passage (delivered by his wife). And then when his actions are not received well, he is snide and infers there were other problems.

All that said, the separation of Church and State allows him to run his church as he wants without government interference or lawsuits. I, however, want to make sure that not a penny of my tax dollars are supporting this man. How can I find out if his church gets any funds from the Faith-Based Initiative?
