For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The FDA makes Emergency Contraception available without a prescription. The makers of the most popular brand of birth control raises their prices dramatically. One kind of pregnancy prevention has gotten easier, another has gotten harder. Thanks to Slate for catching this.

Sadly, almost no one knows about what has become a crisis at publicly funded clinics. All contraceptives made by Ortho-McNeil (that’s anything with an “ortho” at the beginning of it) have gone from pennies for a pack to $18.00 with almost no warning. Now, publicly funded clinics are scrambling to find generic versions to give to their patients. Naturally, this price hike affects low-income and uninsured women the most as those with insurance can still afford the higher-priced contraceptives.

What’s going on, Ortho-McNeil? Raising the price of your drugs so much that they become unaffordable isn’t going to help you make any money.
