Lesbian Kissing Contest

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

The website A Lesbian’s Life is having a kissing contest. Sent in a photo of your hottest girl-on-girl kiss and you could win $500.00. Not bad for getting to make out with a hot girl and take pictures of it…

I will participate in a lesbian-made kissing contest any day. It’s the same reason why I like lesbian and queer-made pornography (Crash Pad, anyone?). When it’s coming from within the community it always feels more authentic than if I know some guy with a camera paid two straight women to make out. There’s nothing like real passion, especially when it’s two adorable women who’ve got the hots for each other.

So, support your local frisky lesbians. Buy some queer made porn or grab your girl, give her a smooch and send in the pic.

Jeers of the week

Monday, February 26th, 2007

I don’t like starting the week off with bad news but I could not let either of these items go unmentioned.

First, a sorority in Indiana kicks out all of their members who aren’t thin, white and pretty enough. Frankly, I didn’t know there were sororities anywhere that didn’t already abide by these ridiculous rules but I’m sad to discover that one of the few holdouts has crumbled. It was especially unnerving to read that they kept the girls who were the most popular with the frat boys. How sad that the sorority cannot exist independently of how popular it is with a bunch of beer swilling morons. (I’m sure there are some frat boys who are perfectly nice guys. Come forward, damnit!) The only good thing I can say about this is thank god there’s been at least some sort of outcry. And, six of 12 girls judged pretty enough to stay quit in protest. The other six were probably the ones making all of the decisions.

Next, South Dakota. Not that I expect great things from this state after they tried (and failed) to ban abortion two years in a row. But abortion bans are almost expected, the other legislative piece of news to come out of SD this week was not. Legislators rejected a bill that would mandate telling rape victims about emergency contraception in emergency departments. Not dispense it to them, just tell them about it. Almost everyone in the country agrees that women should not have to carry to term pregnancies conceived under coerced or forced conditions. Eighty percent of the country believes this (what the hell are the other twenty percent thinking?) so why not tell women about a drug that could keep them from ever having to get pregnant in the first place? Let’s hope that there are some fantastic ER docs out there who know what they are doing. Maybe the news of this will help people learn more and start talking about EC as much as they can.

South Datota Abortion Ban Fails

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

legislationLast year we fought tooth and nail to keep the South Dakota Abortion Ban from passing. Not only are abortion ban’s ridiculous, this one included no exceptions for health or rape and incest. We defeated that bill and this year, they reintroduced it with the exceptions that we made so much fuss about. This could have been hell to fight but the bill just got defeated in committee!

Here is the press release:

South Dakota Senate committee kills abortion ban bill

February 21, 2007

Pierre, S.D. — (AP) - A South Dakota Senate committee, by an 8-1 vote, killed a bill Wednesday that would have banned most abortions in South Dakota.

Opponents argued that the measure is unconstitutional and unlikely to even be considered by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Only Sen. Gene Abdallah of Sioux Falls voted in favor of the legislation in the Senate State Affairs Committee. He says the issue is so sensitive that it will not go away.

But state Sen. Brock Greenfield of Clark testified the timing is not right because of the makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Greenfield, state director of South Dakota Right to Life, says many U.S. senators favor abortion rights and are not likely to approve any federal judges or justices that oppose abortion.

After the defeat, a sponsor said he would try to have the full Senate consider the bill despite the committee’s rejection. But state Sen. Royal “Mac” McCracken of Rapid City says he does not think there are enough votes in the Senate to take up the bill.
