Green Sex

ecokitMaybe it was because An Inconvenient Truth (if you haven’t seen it, go. Really.) won an Oscar. Or maybe it’s because polar bears are drowning because there isn’t enough ice in the arctic regions. Whatever it is, people are starting to think about how to make every aspect of their lives as green as possible - including the bedroom.

Greenpeace has just come out with a list of ways to be green in the bedroom. Fortunately, Babeland is on top of things with our Eco-Friendly sex kit. I’ve posted about this kit already because I love it so much but I also wanted to point out that one of Babeland’s very own employees is quote in an article about the list in conjunction with our kit.

Greenpeace’s Tips:

• Using natural, soy-based lubricants.

• Using S&M paddles that are made from sustainably harvested timber.

• Showering together.

• Turning out the lights.

• Using bamboo bed sheets — they come from a rapidly renewable resource and are said to be “super sexy.”

• Wearing lingerie made with renewable fibers such as hemp (Enamore), bamboo (Butta).

• Not buying vinyl or PVC sex toys that contain phthalates.

fabu. i wonder how bamboo bedsheets feel against the skin? or hemp lingerie for that matter? and aside from paying extra from specialty stores, how is it possible to find out if a sex toy contains phthalates?

The easiest way to tell if a toy has phthalates is if it smells or “off-gasses”. Have you ever smelled a beach ball when you first open it? That plastic smell is phthalates and most sex toys with them have that smell too. Phthalate toys are often called “jelly” “gel” or “jelly rubber” and are sometimes glittery and are softer in texture.

For me the smell test is the best way to go - I don’t want to put anything inside me that smells like plastic or chemicals.
