Babeland on the Evening News!

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

ClaireNYC is abuzz with tomorrow’s Brooklyn Babeland store opening, including the evening news! We’ve had every major network swing by today to interview Claire Cavannah, Babeland’s co-founder, about the new store in Park Slope. If you’re in NYC (or online and want to catch it, most of these channels have live feeds on their site), tune in to Channels 5, 9, and 11 at 10 pm and Channel 4 at 11 pm tonight to catch a tour of the new store and interviews with Claire! And swing on by tomorrow (462 Bergen St. between Flatbush and 5th Ave) to say hi to the amazing Brooklyn Babelanders and check out the brand new Babeland!

Protest… the Pill?

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

pillI’d just sat down for my breakfast repast when a bit of news made me choke on my Fuji apple: thepillkills.com Taking a rejuvenating sip of my coffee (yes, apples and coffee—I do live in Seattle, after all), I figured that I’d stumbled upon another site touting the evils of Plan B (a/k/a the morning after pill). While the opposition to Plan B is more than irksome, it’s sadly something that doesn’t surprise me; what did surprise me was that the site it not about Plan B, but hormonal birth control. Yes, you read that correctly: hormonal birth control.

Normally, I’d be slightly annoyed by such a site, and then write it off as another example of anti-choice extremism. I may even have a few chuckles as I read through the Q & A section:

Q: Isn’t it better to be on the pill when you are sexually active?
A: Better for whom? The pill does not prevent you from getting a sexually transmitted disease, it is not 100 percent effective in preventing pregnancy and you could conceive a child who gets chemically aborted before the baby’s presence is even known to you. Moreover, sexual activity outside of marriage is seriously wrong.

Yes, I’ll admit that the above made me chuckle a bit more than the rest. Regardless, let’s get back on track: it seems as if this site’s message is going live this Saturday, June 7th, in the form of Protest the Pill Day:

Everyone should know the deadly consequences of the pill and similar contraceptive products- they cause chemical abortions. Therefore, American Life League, along with Pro-Life Wisconsin and Pharmacists for Life International Associate groups, calls all pro-lifers across the country to speak out on Protest the Pill Day ‘08: The Pill Kills Babies, scheduled for the Griswold anniversary of Saturday, June 7. We encourage you to gather with your friends for peaceful protests in front of facilities that distribute birth control products.

Now they’ve gone and done it: no longer slightly annoyed, I am now fully irked. Its one thing to publish this on the internet, but a whole other thing when these folks will be staking out territory at Planned Parenthoods across the country. While I’m sure that I’m preaching to the choir here, I’ll remind you all that PP offers a host of affordable health care options and resources for women of all walks of life; it is a place that women feel comfortable going to, knowing that their needs will be met with respect, quality, compassion, and accessibility. Facing a faction of protestors (who are attempting to shame and mis-educate these women) casts a negative pallor upon PP’s many positive attributes.

If you’re interested in countering these protests, I highly suggest getting in touch with your local Planned Parenthood to see if they’ll be in need of additional escorts. New Yorkers in particular may want to attend the Union Square counter protest, time TBA. For more information, contact PPNYC Action Council at ppnycupfront@gmail.com

Take care of yourselves, and let’s nip this in the bud before it reaches full bloom.

Penis and Anal Toys on Sale!

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

flirtIn case you didn’t know, every month, Babeland has a selection of toys that are 20% off. Some months we discount waterproof toys, other months G-spot toys reign supreme. This month, it’s penis and anal toys. I’m so happy that we’re highlighting the butt and penis toys since those are two sections of the store that frequently get overlooked in people’s enthusiasm for vibrators (which I completely understand). Anal toys, especially, can be a little intimidating but hopefully spending a little bit less will help some people take the plunge. And, if you’re looking to pick up a little present for a partner (or yourself), then the penis toys are a lot of fun.

Penis toys:

Trojan fingertip vibe: A condom and a vibrator together! This little finger vibe is soft with a solid vibration and it’s super easy to use.

Blossom sleeve: Over the time that I’ve been at Babeland, I’ve seen this toy become a classic. It was around before all of the other strokers and for good reason. It’s soft and squishy with ridges on the inside. Add a little lube and a hand job will never feel the same way. Check out our YouTube video about the Blossom Sleeve!

Vibrating Leather Cockring: This style of cockring is all the rage. The leather is easy to use and the vibration is strong.

Fleshlight: Ah, the Cadillac of strokers. Nothing will get you off quite like the Fleshlight. It is the softest thing I’ve ever felt and I hear that the closed end makes for a nice amount of suction. Babeland also has a fun video all about the Fleshlight on YouTube.
nexusAnal Toys:

Maximus: no anal play is complete without a quality lube. You can’t go wrong with Maximus.

Nexus Glide: An improved take on the Aneros, Nexus Glide is an amazing prostate stimulator with a ball bearing for maximum movement and pleasure.

Bend Over Beginner/BoB combo: Get a harness, two dildos and an instructional DVD all in one! This deal is incredible and I’m very excited that we’re carrying it. Equip yourself with this and some Maximus and you’re ready to play!

Little Flirt: The perfect beginner’s butt plug, the little flirt will go in nice and easy and help your muscles relax.
