Babe of the Month is a new series we’re starting here at the Babeland blog. Each month we’ll highlight someone in the sex positive community that we love. You get to learn more about them and we get to honor them for the fantastic work that they are doing on behalf of sex positivity, pleasure, creativity and passion. As you can imagine, the list of possible people is incredibly long as there are so many people in our community who deserve our respect and attention.

You might be thinking, “Babe” of the Month – what do you mean by Babe, exactly? Does someone have to look like Jenna Jameson to qualify?

Not at all. At Babeland we have a much broader definition of what a Babe can be. A Babe can have any gender, age or sexuality; they can be a writer, educator, blogger, artist, activist, sex worker, do-gooder, or rabble-rouser; their work deals with issues around sex, gender, sexual orientation, class, race, education, geography, physical ability and more. In short, they rock and Babeland wants to show them some love.

September is going to be a very busy month for the Babeland blog. Babeland is celebrating its 15 year anniversary this month with many different activities. We’re taking some time out to look back on what the world was like 15 years ago when Babeland first started and what it is like now. For many of us, Babeland or places like Babeland, significantly contributed and continue to shape our sex lives in positive and fun ways. Maybe we bought our first vibrator at Babeland, maybe Babeland helped us have our first orgasm or ushered us into our first anal sex experience. Or maybe we purchased our first pair of handcuffs here or watched our first porn clip at a Babeland workshop.

It’s been almost two years since the Babeland blog started posting regularly. Bloggers can be mysterious beings – who are they? What makes them tick? In a two part entry, we invite you to get inside the heads of the blogging babes of Babeland. First up is our intrepid blogger/blog administrator, Dallas.

How long have you been working at Babeland? Almost four years. I’ve been shopping at Babeland for eight years.

Why did you start working at Babeland? I discovered the store my freshman year of college and was a devoted customer and fan every since. Babeland helped me figure out that I wanted to go into health education – even before I worked here. Getting a job at Babeland after I graduated seemed like the next logical step.

Favorite customer interaction: That would be hard to say – I’ve had so many. It could be the septegenarian couple I spoke with who needed to know the location of the clitoris. Or, it could be the middle aged man whose wife announced that she wanted him to spank her. Or, it could be the guy I spoke with just the other day who asked me, without reservation “so does the g-spot really exist?” and then listened openly as I explained that yes, it does!

Question you get asked the most: “What’s the best _______ ?” I completely understand the urge to buy “the best” thing. In an age of Consumer Reports, there really is a “best” digital camera or flat-screen TV. Sex toys don’t work that way though so I love this question because I get to remind people that everyone is really different so what we’re going to do is help them find the best toy for them. That’s so much more fun for everyone than just pointing to something and saying “here, buy this.”

Favorite sex toy: Again, this is a tough one. My favorite vibrator right now is the GiGi - it just suits all of my needs. My first vibrator was the Silver Bullet – an oldie but a goodie.

Favorite lube: I never go anywhere without Babelube. Seriously.

Toy you’re most looking forward to: I can’t wait to try the SaSi! Anything that simulates oral sex is a must-buy in my book. I’m also keeping my fingers crossed that one day someone will make a good vegan flogger.

Favorite Sex Blog: I’m addicted to blogs so picking one is difficult. I always read Violet Blue because she’s the hottest techno sex geek I’ve ever seen. And I love the Daily Bedpost, not only because Em & Lo rock, but because I know Dr. Kate!

Your life outside of Babeland: I’m currently getting my masters in public health studying sexuality and health (what else!). I’ve been heavily involved with the reproductive rights/justice world, working especially closely with the medical professions. In my spare time, I read, cook, do crosswords and rollerskate.
