The Morning TV Sex Toy Showdown

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Alright, showdown may be a strong word, but there’s a mini-debate happening on morning TV about the appropriateness of vibrator talk. Here’s what happened:

On Monday, Barbara Walters made a joke that involved vibrators in which she joked, in a discussion about buying luxury items, that for Joy (one of the hosts) a vibrator was not a luxury but a necessity. Not only was it a pretty great joke, but I liked the basic idea of thinking of vibrators as everyday items, not luxury items.

The only part that make me cringe a little bit was that Sherry wondered why Joy would need a vibrator since she has a boyfriend. Sigh.

Apparently other people weren’t cringing at the boyfriend comment, they were cringing because Barbara Walters was talking about vibrators. On Morning Joe Tuesday morning, host Mika Brzezinski made faces while they played the clip from the View and said “that’s just not right”. Apparently Barbara Walters talking about vibrators is disgusting because she’s…. an older woman? a reporter?  Barbara Walters? talking about sex?

Give me a break. As Joy pointed out on on the View on Tuesday as they discussed what happened on Morning Joe “I don’t understand why people get embarrassed by things that are just sexual – I don’t understand it. It’s like eating, drinking, sleeping – it’s sex, it’s about sex, what’s the big deal about it?”

Amen. We all have sex and, news flash, we all get older. Get over it, already and do some shopping at Babeland. Sherri Shepherd suggested that Barbara send Mika a vibrator. I would recommend the Gigi – it just might change her mind.

Watch Barbara’s original joke here.

Sex Educator for a Day: Babeland in Women’s Health Mag

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Our Awesome Seattle Staff

Ever wondered what it would be like to be a Babeland sex educator? Recently, a reporter from Women’s Health Magazine stopped by our Seattle location to learn the ropes (so to speak). I think it’s safe to say she learned a lot.

At first, she was a little hesitant to learn about everything…

“Now we’re moving on to lube,” Audrey says.

I am about to tell Audrey that I am afraid that even touching lube will bring on early menopause when – splat- I’ve been slimed. “Rub your fingers together,” Audrey says. The entire Babeland staff has gathered around, each eager to show me a favorite brand of lube.

Next, I dutifully undergo a lecture on 25 brands of condoms. My vibrator lesson is shorter than you might think – turns out I really do understand the clitoris.

But eventually she was ready to try it on her own…

My first customer is a dude who tells me he’s afraid that if his girlfriend gets off with a vibrator she won’t want to have intercourse with him anymore. I assure him that there’s absolutely zero chance of that happening – that what people like about sex is contact and closeness, and perhaps he would like to buy a vibrating ring that they can use together?

Then a married couple comes in. They’re totally hot for each other, but a medication she’s taking is giving her dryness issues. I remember the lube combination – Sliquid Silk with a silicone-based lube, either Eros or Pink – that’s best for serious dryness. They run out of the store smiling, with their hands all over each other’s butts.

And then she learns why we all love working at Babeland so much…

“Oh my God,” I say after they’ve gone. “You guys, like, actually help people live happier lives! You give people the tools to make sex better”. Before this moment I honestly believed that sex didn’t qualify as good if it needed “enhancements”.

Amen. I couldn’t agree more.
