Reproductive and Sexual Health News and Action

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

There is so much going on in the world of reproductive and sexual health right now. President Obama is making some terrific changes and hopefully there will be more to come.

ACTION: Take action right now and send your representatives a letter supporting comprehensive sex education. We have a chance to get rid of the massive amounts of abstinence-only education funding that have been teaching our children misleading and harmful information for years. Click here to send your letter.

ACTION: This week is National LGBT Health Awareness week. Lambda Legal has joined a campaign to fight for equal rights for LGBT folks and people living with HIV in our healthcare system. You can sign their petition to President Obama here.

ACTION: In his wisdom, Obama is also attempting to overturn Bush’s last-minute midnight ruling that gave healthcare providers the ability to refuse any service or referral because of “moral issues”. I don’t know about you, but for me the real moral issue is that any healthcare provider could even attempt to justify their denial of care to a patient. You can tell the Department of Health and Human Services that you think this ruling should be overturned here.

GOOD NEWS! And lastly – some really (really) good news!! Two years ago, a legislative error skyrocketed the prices of birth control, making it much harder for clinics to provide low-cost solutions to women’s reproductive healthcare needs. Yesterday, the Senate passed the appropriations bill and in it is the fix for that error! Birth control is going to go back to being more affordable! This is fantastic news for all women who need access. Thank you to everyone who wrote and spoke to their representatives about this error.

Babeland Brooklyn Tour on NYC24

Monday, March 9th, 2009

I’m completely in love with our Brooklyn Store. It’s just the right size and it’s super, super cute! NYC24.org recently came to visit for a tour (just click on the link that says “video”) and talked with our founder, Claire Cavanah about why women-friendly sex toy shops are different from other stores. Claire makes some excellent points and shows off a couple of our favorite toys.

Check out the video here (just click on the link that says “video”).

Toys Claire mentioned:

Silver Bullet

Gigi

Rabbit Habbit

Hitachi Magic Wand

Review Roundup from Babeland

Friday, March 6th, 2009

It’s time for another review roundup. We have some terrific new toys and I’m happy to say that the reviewers are loving them! I can’t use every toy we have (who has that much time?) so I rely on reviews like these to help customers make decisions.

I’ve been incredibly curious about the Bloomy (pictured) since the first day I saw it. I’m happy to learn from The Bell and Collar that it’s as much fun as it looks like it would be:

The first night of play, I tried the toy out as as a g-spot dildo. I warmed myself up , lubed Bloomy, and excitedly inserted her into my vagina.  Two things stood out right away; the amazing sensation that the curves give, and that the end of the curly loop is long enough for clitoral stimulation.

If you’re interested in comparing reviews, check out Of Sex And Love’s review of the Bloomy:

I was really excited to find a toy which both looked and felt amazing and the unique orgasms the Bloomy gave me were a welcome change from my usual routine. It was exciting to learn something new about myself and I think the Bloomy makes a great toy when paired with a bullet vibe but it’s certainly versatile enough to use in other ways.

Toys for Tarts gave the new Peridise Anal PC toys a try. If you’ve been wondering what these are and what they can do, this is the review to read:

So after ensuring cleanliness and applying some lube, I slowly inserted the larger of the two. Partially. Just the tip. This is the purpose of this specialty toy.

After minimal insertion, you’re supposed to relax and allow your body’s natural reactions to take over. It was almost maddening for me to stop at this point so I decided to add a bit of vibrator play. That worked for awhile but soon I could feel fluctuations and the beginning waves of anal contractions.

With a bit of clenching and relaxing, a sort of tug of war game ensued with my parts, and I found myself in an unexpected but powerful orgasm.
