Oprah: Moms – buy vibrators for your daughters!

Wow. Dr. Laura Berman was on Oprah yesterday for a whole show devoted to “the Talk” and how to do it right. She dispensed a lot of advice on how to promote healthy sexuality in teen girls and even coached one mom through the Talk with her teenage daughter. I think what Dr. Berman had to say was right on. For instance:

“You want to start these conversations early with your kids—before they find themselves in the circumstances where they’re having to make those healthy sexual decisions.”

and

“Feeling good about their bodies. Feeling good about their genitals. Feeling good about their sexual function. Feeling empowered about who they are as people and as sexual beings. And then that makes the path so much easier when they’re in their teen years.”

and, for a 10 year old:

“We’re going to show her a picture of her vulva and [say], ‘This is your clitoris and it has lots of sensations, so some girls find that it feels good to touch themselves there, and that’s totally normal,’”
