Wow. I am so jealous of your daughter! My mom always made me feel bad about feelings I was having while I was growing up and I think it may have led to some of the unhealthy sexual relationships I maintained in adolescence. Even now, in my mid-20s in NYC, though she tried to understand, it always feels like judgment. Kudos to your healthy attitude! Your daughter will be a more well adjusted individual for it.

Good question about the books. Both my kids loved the cartoon book called "It's Perfectly Normal". The young kids love the cartoons, and the older kids like having it around as they develop questions. Also, Body Drama, is a newer, really great book for girls going through puberty, written in their 'voice.' Finally, older or more sophisticated teens would enjoy "S.E.X" by Heather Corinna, who also hosts the fantastic resource site scartleteen.com

Oh, and BTW to respond to Sparrow, my daugther gave me the ok to post the gist of our talk to the blog.

Wow. "Sex positivity" should not, does not obviate discretion, respect, and privacy. I find it difficult to believe that a thirteen year old who "is intensely shy and private" would give her mother permission to have details of her sexual development publicly posted. This is a bit disturbing. And as she knows what you do (and is embarrassed by it) and friends of yours know what you do, there is a chance she'll figure out she's been used as blog fodder and exposed...seems like a trauma bomb about to go off. Poor girl. I hope I'm wrong and she's okay with this.

My beloved Hitachi lays by the side of my own bed, and is as much a fixture as the novel that sits next to it.

I think that modeling healthy attitudes toward sex may influence tweens more than discussing them.

Wow, all in a day's work! I like the way you handled it, including leaving her the vibrator for if and when she is interested. It may be years from now, who knows? But you got the message to her and the toy is a tangible reminder of that message- that sexual pleasure is ok.
