The science of condoms

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

BoingBoing linked to a very interesting new study in the journal Contraception about condom testing. Studies show that condom “failure” is generally attributable to non-use, there are times when the condom breaks and it’s important for condom companies to know why that is happening.

Thus, the machine you see before you. It simulates penetration to discover just how it is that condoms are breaking. Turns out, it is generally caused when one part of the intact condom gets stretched again and again through thrusting and eventually breaks:

“Evidence combined from examining returns, questionnaire responses and the coital model strongly suggests a single predominant mechanism of failure we named “blunt puncture,” where the tip of the thrusting male penis progressively stretches one part of the intact condom wall until it ultimately breaks.

CONCLUSIONS: Blunt puncture appears to be the mechanism of breakage responsible for more than 90% of condom breakage not attributable to misuse.

Now that we know this, condom manufacturers can start to improve condom designs to keep this from happening. In the meantime, I would recommend a simple solution: lube! Just put a dab of lubrication on the inside of the condom before putting it on – this will reduce friction between the latex and the penis and will allow the condom to move around more, reducing the stress that will be placed on any individual section of latex.

I haven’t studied this solution in a double-blind randomized control trial, but just trust me. Plus, it increases sensation for the person wearing the condom so overall, it’s a winning idea.

How to DJ Your Orgasm with the Freestyle

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

The brand new Freestyle vibrators are flying off of our shelves with good reason. By all accounts, they are a blast to play with. Music and sex go hand in hand so if you had a new vibrator that responded to music, who would you give it to? If you’re thinking DJs, then we’re on the same track.

We recently gave three of our favorite DJs in Seattle the new Freestyle and let them play around with it to discover what music worked best. Click on the links to see what playlists they would use to with the Freestyle so you can start building you own perfect Orgasm mix.

DJ Mathematix

How would you sum up your DJing style?
Quixotic.

How does music affect your sex life, and vice versa?
Music affects every part of my life, including sex—it sets a mood and helps me clear my mind. And a good experience in a club is a lot like sex, which I think anyone who’s had a great night out dancing can relate to.
