Behind the Vagina Mold

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Violet Blue‘s latest San Francisco Chronicle column is all about fake sex toy vaginas. Specifically, one fake vagina in particular – that of the amazing April Flores, past Babeland Babe of the Month. Violet interviews April at length about her feelings about the toy and the process.

The best part? April created an art show out of the toy, giving it to artists so that they could use it to create works of art. The show is coming to New York and Philadelphia in October if you want to check it out. Here’s what April had to say:

VB: Afterward, did you get one? What did you think and feel the first time you saw and handled it?

AF: It took about six months from the molding process to receive a prototype. The very first thing I noticed about the toy was its substantial weight. It weighs almost eight pounds, and I kept joking that it was my baby. I could not stop studying the toy up close because I had never seen my vagina from that angle without the use of a mirror. It was truly surreal how realistic it looked and felt. Cyberskin warms to body temperature and feels just like human flesh so I just kept squeezing its thighs and belly, watching it jiggle. We also had fun taking pictures with my legs spread holding the toy directly in front of the area that was replicated. The resulting pictures are some of the strangest I have posted on my blog.

VB: What is it like having this toy out in the world? Do you ever think about what people are doing with it, and how does that make you feel?

AF: It feels great to have the toy out in the world. I hope that people are enjoying their toy, dressing it up in cute lingerie and using it to pleasure themselves. I hope that some bring it along in the tub and incorporate water because it is waterproof. It would also be cool if some kept their toy in the box and displayed it on a shelf like they would a collector’s item. I sort of feel that it’s out in the world and has taken on a life of its own.

Teenagers in Sex Toy Stores

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

The web is all abuzz recently with the news that David Hasselhoff brought his 17 year old daughter to an upscale sex toy and lingerie shop in Los Angeles. This, apparently, has caused some kind of a ruckus:

We’re afraid we’re going to hassle the Hoff a little bit over this one.

TMZ reports that David Hasseloff had an unusual father-daughter outing with his girl Hayley Hasselhoff on Wednesday night. According to the site, the former Baywatch hunk took Hayley to a launch party for a new line of lingerie. Which was being held at West Hollywood “erotic boutique” Coco de Mer.

Yes, an erotic boutique. Where they sell all sorts of prongy things that vibrate. And probably a questionable lotion or two as well.

My advice to everyone reporting on this story in this fashion? Chill out. A 17 year old is, first of all, less than a year away from being able to walk into that same store all by herself. Second, 17 year old teenagers know that sex, lingerie and sex toys exist. Instead of treating them like scary places full of “prongy things”, what if we tried presenting them as places where a person can learn about their sexuality and find things to help them have pleasurable sex? If they already know that sex exists, they’ll probably be thrilled to find out a place like that exists. (If I meet a teen who finds out where I work, their first question is always “how old do I have to be?”). Let’s stop treating teenagers like infants and start treating them like the young adults they are.

I also have to take issue with the depiction of the store. Would you want to shop in a place that sold prongy things and questionable lotions? I sure wouldn’t. Why couldn’t they just say vibrators and lubrication instead of making it sound like Harry Potter would buy his school supplies there?

Do you have any stories of people freaking out over teenage sexuality? Share them in the comments.

New Staff Picks 20% Off!

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

When you work at Babeland long enough, you get to see a lot of sex toys. Some toys are classics – they’ve been around forever and we’re never letting them go. Others enter our lives and we fall instantly in love with them, recommending them to customers because of their enhanced quality or features. Because we’ve seen so many toys, customers often ask us to tell them what they should get. While we always strive to match the toy to a particular person (everyone is different after all), we do have our favorites and we’ll gladly talk about their merits.

Since we are asked so often for our recommendations, we decided to put together some of our favorite toys, write about why we like them, and sell them for 20% off! It’s a win all around.

Here are some of our newest staff picks:

The Lucky 7: “I love to bring the portable, discreet Lucky 7 vibe on vacation with me—no embarrassing moments at the airport! And though it’s little, it packs a big punch with seven different speeds and functions. Everything I need, in a tiny package.”

The Rock Chick: “The Rock Chick vibrator is the first toy that made me ejaculate. I like that I can rock it back and forth against my G-spot and clit, building to intense and gushing orgasms. It can be all about the G-spot, and then I can back off and concentrate on the clit vibration for a while…and then go back for more firm, flexible G-spot stroking!”
