Sex Toy Jewelry: an interview with Ti of Incoqnito

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

It takes a lot to impress our crew of seasoned sex educators here at Babeland, and I’ll tell you this much:  we’re impressed.  Incoqnito‘s line of gorgeous, wearable sensation toys is already flying off the shelves, and you can color me unsurprised, because this stuff is stunning.  Oh, and did I mention that it’s functional?  Not only can you wear some of these beautiful pieces out on the town as a necklace or bracelet, but then, when you pin your date up against the wall of the restaurant bathroom (or, um, wherever), you can convert the jewelry into nipple clamps, handcuffs, or sensation toys.  Truly covetable stuff.  Click here for an interview with Ti, designer of the ingenious Incoqnito line, and more information about the pieces themselves.  You don’t want to miss it.

Saying Yes to Sex

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Claire Cavanah, co-founder of Babeland, was recently quoted in a New York Magazine piece about ways New Yorkers can be happier (since we were ranked at the bottom of a happiness scale). Claire’s contribution has definitely gotten people’s attention with reactions varying from outright support to confusion to condemnation. We wanted to take a minute to explain her comment a bit more to see if we can’t correct the misunderstanding.

First, the quote: “Just say yes every time your partner wants to have sex. It’s only twenty minutes out of your day, and it makes you both feel better. If you’re not in a relationship, say yes to your own private date night at least three times a week.”

Now, some folks (here, and in the comments here) interpreted this as saying that you always, absolutely have to have sex every time your partner asks, even if you really don’t want to. I can understand how the quote would be interpreted that way, but I would also hope that anyone who knows Babeland would know that we would never advocate doing something that wasn’t consensual or that you didn’t want to do. Instead, this idea is more about challenging yourself to not wait until the exact perfect moment, but to get started and see what happens. I’ll let Rachel Venning, Babeland’s other co-founder explain how this works for her in detail:

“I realized when my kid was about one year old that because we were both tired, busy with the parenting, busy with work, waiting to feel sexy and turned on, for Jasper to be asleep, the stars were aligning for us to have sex about once every few months. That’s not the sex life I want for myself or with my partner. So I decided to lower my standards. Instead of waiting to really be in the mood, I decided to go for it whenever she offered. I found that by starting to fool around I quickly got in the mood.

My point is to be willing. The more hurdles we set up, the less sex we’ll have. So of course I’m not saying grit your teeth and get through it if you really don’t want to. But if it’s just that watching TV seems easier, step up to the plate and give sex a try.

I made that resolution four years ago and am still living it now.”

What are your thoughts? Have you tried this? Do you think it could work?
