Transgender Homecoming King Dethroned

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

A big thank you to Jezebel for point this out to me and for writing about it in such a fantastic way. It’s not at all surprising to me that a high school wouldn’t allow a trans guy to be homecoming king because he was still registered at the school as a girl. Especially since doing so involved negating the votes of the people who had elected him in the first place. Trans people’s voices are often silenced but I think the outrage this time is coming from the fact that many non-trans people’s voices were silenced too. And they’re used to being heard.

Babeland applauds this young person and their classmates for speaking out. To join in, join the Oak Is My King group on Facebook.

The group’s founders go on to urge students to wear “Oak is my King” t-shirts, and to “encourage all to write letters not only to our school paper, but to the chronicle as well.” You can contact the Mona Shores newspaper, The Sailors’ Log, via the “Contact Us” link on its website — contact emails for the editorial staff of the Muskegon Chronicle are listed here.

Science: Casual Sex Not Emotionally Damaging

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Isn’t it great when science confirms what you’ve known all along? A recent study found that “young adults who have casual sex are no more likely than those in committed relationships to experience psychological problems”. Duh?

We live in a culture with a lot of taboos around sex. You shouldn’t have it young or casually, with same gendered people or before marriage, you shouldn’t want it too much (if you’re a girl) and you should want it all the time (if you’re a guy). With all of this baggage, it’s no surprise to me that as a culture we have the idea that casual sex is harmful. If you want to restrain sexual activity to the bonds of marriage, you can’t have casual sex  – so why not say it could be emotionally harmful?

Casual sex can give people an opportunity to try new things sexually, to experience new sensations and to have a quick, passionate encounter, different from what you get in a long-term relationship. Although I will admit that sometimes sex with a person that doesn’t know your body well can be, well, not quite as pleasurable, there’s still something to be said for the experience. New people can teach you new things – new areas of your body that enjoy stimulation, new types of stimulation, new places, etc.

So for all of those young people out there having casual sex, I say stay safe – and have fun!
