Last week, we told you about the release of the film Orgasm Inc., the new documentary about the medicalization of women’s sexuality. One of the things that happened for me when viewing the film was that I kept thinking: “Someone needs to tell these women about their bodies!” I wanted to walk every woman in the film through a Babeland location and talk to them about their pleasure and how to get it. In lieu of that actually happening, I’m going to enlist the help of our guest blogger Juicy Justine, for some of the most common questions about female orgasms we receive.
Recently, Salon.com writer Tracy Clark-Flory posted an article about men’s changing notions regarding vibrators in the bedroom. Rather than the Sex and the City-promoted trope of the vibrator being there in lieu of a man (a la the Rabbit), Clark-Flory suggests that vibrators are being re-appropriated by men as a sexual assistant, rather than a phallic replacement. Clark-Flory cites recent trends of women being more vocal about the benefits of sex toys as well as the artistic design of such companies as JimmyJane (and let’s not forget, Lelo and JeJoue) as being the cause. I would even say that’s the case for everyone; after all, who wouldn’t rather pull out the sleek, friendly Form 2 to stimulate yourself or your partner, rather than a suspiciously fuzzy, jelly rubber mystery object? Sex toys have changed and perhaps with them, people’s opinions on where they belong in the bedroom: hidden under your bed or displayed proudly in plain sight. For myself, I can definitely agree that men are beginning to approach toys a bit differently, though the Internet and its proliferation of sex toy reviews (on sites such as ours) online has also been a contributing factor in my mind. More and more, I encounter men who have done their homework on a Gigi the same way they might research a power drill from Home Depot. And yes, they’ll both help you get the job done.
What do you think? Are men more willing to play with toys these days? Why do you think that is?
