Cosmopolitan surveyed women about sex, dating and relationships. Only 20% of the women who responded said they were “Completely satisfied – wouldn’t change a thing” when asked “How satisfied are you with your sex life?”. That’s really upsetting and means we have our work cut out for us here at Babeland. Maybe a survey of our own is in order, too.

Trojan hopes its ‘Good Vibrations’ truck will stimulate a discussion about sex — and we do, too. Flared bases keep toys in the right places

See, a flared base!

A new article in Scientific American says that over an eleven year period nearly 7,000 people showed up in the hospital with a vibrator or dildo stuck in an orifice . We’re guessing they didn’t get good advice about how to use their toy, or maybe they’re all just willful rule breakers who chose to ignore the voice of reason. Don’t be one of them. Just follow these simple guidelines to keep your playtime in the bedroom and out of the ER.

Rule #1 — Flared bases reduce the risk of an embarrassing ER visit by, like, 1000%. Anything that goes in the butt should have a flared base, guaranteeing easy removal and to keep it from going places no man or woman or piece of silicone has gone before. And don’t forget the lube! Anything that goes in the butt should be nice and slippery, too.

Rule #2 — No phthalates . Study results vary on the possible harm, but why take a risk? We’ll permit you to put a condom over your favorite toy if it does contain phthalates, but when you replace it, no more excuses. All of Babeland’s products are phthalate-free. Rule #3 — Know what’s in your lube. Parabens? Glycerin? Trans fats? (Not really, as far as we know.) Check out our handy buying guide.

Rule #4 — Choose cock rings that come off easily . Beginners can start with adjustable rings. Look for snaps, velcro, or super-stretch rings. Don’t keep it in place for more than twenty minutes until you get used to it and know what is happening. Do it right and it won’t turn black and fall off.

Rule #5 — Laugh. Most sex emergencies aren’t the kind that require a doctor’s assistance. It’s more often a feeling of embarrassment, self-censorship or shame. Was I too loud? Did my body really make that noise? Did I look sexy when I came? It’s the stuff that keeps us from letting go and experiencing that soul-shaking pleasure that is our right and our destiny. So let it go already, laugh it off. (And if there is a toy stuck in a place where the sun don’t shine, calm down and relax, chances are you can push it out.)

A Recent Sex Education Study on Fathers and Daughters

I don’t remember a whole lot about “The Talk” as a child, but since my mother was a nurse at the time, I remember there being a sex ed book left on my desk as a child with a note, suggesting I ask whatever questions I needed to after I read it: an empathetic touch on her part, with a bit of enforced self-evaluation added in. As for my father, he didn’t play much of a role in my sex ed as a child, but he was integral in helping me start a Gay/Straight Alliance as a teenager, since he is a lawyer and knew the legal ins and outs of the process. As a teenager, it was a very empowering act for me and one that my father played the largest role in for me growing up and subsequently, becoming a sex educator.

As part of a recent study examining family influences on adolescent sexual risk, Dr. Katherine Hutchinson, an associate professor at the NYU College of Nursing, asked a representative sample of approximately 250 women, aged 19 to 21, what impact their fathers had on their sex education. The women who were surveyed suggested that if their fathers were able to relay information to them regarding what men think and the male perspective on sex, the women themselves might be more able to speak to their own partners regarding sex more fluently. While few reported having many conversations with their fathers about sex, they were inclined to think that their ability to speak intimately with partners might have been enhanced by some sex ed talk with their fathers.

Fellatio vs. Cunnilingus

Dear Babeland friends,

I have a question for you. Why is it that our Fellatio or How To Please Your Man classes sell out just about every month (yes we tend to have 1 a month) and our Cunnilingus or How To Please Your Woman classes only get a handful of attendees the 2 times we hold it a year? We have a She Comes First class scheduled in Seattle for this Sunday, and it is looking to be a small turn out for the event while our Fellatio class at the end of the month is almost sold out already.

I talk about sex a lot. Not only at work, but wherever I go, somehow I out myself as working at Babeland and get a flurry of sex questions. This happens at the deli counter at the grocery store; the hair salon; waiters at restaurants; when dropping off my car to be fixed; on airplanes (always on airplanes); at parties; and recently I was in Paris and the table next to us hearing our American accents asked where we were from and after saying Seattle we chatted enough for me to say that I worked here and BAM – the table of guys had lots of sex questions for me.

Basically, I’m talking to more than just the Babeland customers here. I have never had a guy tell me that his girlfriend or wife wasn’t good at giving a BJ. Usually guys are asking for sex tips for their gal, or relationship advice (which I try not to dole out) and occasionally questions on how to get her in the mood or that she doesn’t seem to like sex or have time for sex and how can he help change that. On the other hand, women will often confess that their guy is a bit clueless when he heads downtown. It might be that they have no idea how to use their fingers in a pleasing way; or he is asking if she is done 4 minutes after he starts; or his technique is clearly spelling out the alphabet with the tip of his tongue.

The point being, those ladies are lacking this good loving from their partners, but their partners don’t seem to think they need the lesson. On the flip side, the guys seem to be well taken care of in this department but their gals still flock to the classes. Is the reason that guys needs in the southern hemisphere are well attended to because women are eager to learn more on this topic, talk about it a lot and take classes and lessons? Maybe so. If guys followed the lead of their lady lovers and took a class on tongue tricks to tickle her fancy, then maybe the reverse would be true for the gals.

Here is the other thing I think is interesting to note: while we get about 40 women a month attending the male pleasure classes on their own or with groups of friends, the female pleasure classes are only about half full and they are mostly couples. So the ladies are escorting their guys to the classes. This is great and all. Both classes actually have tons info for both the giver and the receiver, but why is it women are comfortable attending a sex class sans partner, but the reverse is not true?

We have tried to switch up the topics to get more guys to the classes over the years: Pussy Pleasure; Cunnilingus; Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men; How to Please Your Woman; and most recently with the help of Ian Kerner and his best selling book, She Comes First, we developed an all new class on oral sex by a man for men. Still, it’s not drawing the crowds.

Guys – why are you not taking the classes? What would you attend? Ladies, do your guys need a class? Do you want them to attend the classes we offer?

Elle’s Sex Survey Results Are In!

What do women think about sex? When are they happist? How do they communicate with their partners? These are all questions that Elle asked its readers in a large survey that they recently published. Now, bear in mind that these are readers of Elle who chose to respond, so it’s not the most scientific survey, but it’s still an interesting look at women’s pleasure.

Over 75,000 people answered the survey and overall, women are very happy with their sex lives.

Oral Sex
Women who climax more now than they did during the early days of their relationships receive oral sex at least half the time and say that they are good communicators in bed. Half of the respondents said they had oral sex the last time they were sexually intimate.

Trying new things
Half of the respondents also said they read articles or books to help improve their sex lives. I think that’s a great number and I wish it was more. Books can give us new ideas and explain things we’ve never understood before. I hope that some of those participants read some of my favorites like: Sex Toys 101, Sensuous Magic, and the Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women.
7 in 10 respondents also said that sex was better when they experimented. This included new positions and date nights. I bet if they’d asked, they would have found that these women were also trying sex toys. Maybe we can write to Elle and ask them to include questions about vibrators in their survey.

Which Country is the Most Sexually Satisfied?

When it comes to sexual satisfaction, countries where women and men are considered equal come out on top. A study by researchers at the University of Chicago surveyed an international group of people between 40 and 80 years old. The results? The United States isn’t first on the list, but we’re not at the bottom of the heap either. The top five are: Australia, Spain, Canada, Belgium, and the United States (64.6 % satisfied respodents vs. Australia’s 71.4%).

The countries with the least amount of sexually satisfied couples? Thailand, China, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Japan. According to the researchers, cultures that put more of an emphasis on procreation, tend to forget about women’s sexual pleasure leading to unsatisfied couples. What seems sad to me is that the country that invented the Rabbit Habbit (pictured) has the least amount of sexual satisfaction. Maybe they’re just measuring the wrong things?
Although this is an interesting study, I would love it if these researchers would look at some other things too. For instance:

1. How many people internationally masturbate?

2. How many people internationally talk to their partners about their sex lives?

3. What do the sexual satisfaction numbers look like for people under the age of 40? Are we “young’uns” any more satisfied?

What Would You Do With 100 Dildos?

I recently discovered a website about a man who was given 100 ninety-nice cent dildos from a friend for Christmas. They’re actually vibrators but regardless, he’s asking people to write in and suggest uses for 100 vibrators that are non-sexual and non-destructive. Of course I think the contest would be just as interesting and far more entertaining if he included sexual uses, but hey, they’re his gifts. The whole thing has prompted me to ask some questions of my own:

Can you imagine having 100 vibrators? Where would you keep them?
Who would you give 100 vibrators to in your life? If the idea sounds like fun, go for something on a smalller scale and hand out some toys at your next dinner party, shower, or birtdhay bash.
Which Babeland toy would you most like to have 100 of? I think I’d love to have 100 Babelights or possibly 100 Finger Funs. I’m sure I could find uses for all of them.

Fidelity Survey? I Have My Doubts

A recent “Fidelity Survey” in Playboy magazine asked 1,432 married men and women if they had ever cheated on their partner. Seventy-five percent of men and 82 percent of women said no. Half the men and 66 percent of the women even said they’ve never even entertained thoughts of infidelity.

Not to sound absolutely cynical, and not to put down the hard work of the sociologists behind this study, but I’m dubious about the results. Especially given that Playboy readers are groomed to fantasize about doing it with a different Pet or Playmate each month!

Sex and Love

A recent study reported by sexologist Dr. Laura Berman stated that 80% of the women surveyed believe that sex should only happen between two people who are in love.

What about three people who are in love, or two people who are very, deeply in.. lust?

The Way to an Aussie’s Heart

Remember the saying, “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?” Australian men prove there’s some truth to the old adage. In a recent survey, over 65% of men polled said they’d prefer a candlelit dinner to sex or good conversation (as opposed to 46% of the women polled.) And two-thirds said they’d give up the sports or the fishing trip in favor of spending a romantic weekend away with their mates. I must say, this warms my heart, and makes me a little bit hungry. I only hope these romantic Aussies remember to take along some of Babeland’s romantic toys like the Lover’s Paintbox or the Kama Sutra Honey Dust, since both will satisfy a variety of appetites!
